Guys, let’s be honest for a second. Being tall is GREAT; people look up to us literally and figuratively, we are the alphas in any room, and there is nothing we can’t reach. 

But, if you don’t have a travel budget of $10,000 or more per day, then travelling is one area we didn’t hit the genetic lottery on. Travelling in comfort is made for those small “normal” people. 

With the travel industry downsizing more and more, I have put together this guide to travelling for tall men so you can make it through a day of flying around the globe and feel like a million bucks!

Pick and choose the time you fly

There is a consistent routine to busy days and less busy days when choosing a day to fly like any other industry. 

Why is this important?

By choosing a less busy day to travel, you will significantly increase your percentages in getting a free exit row upgrade, or maybe even a sympathetic air hostess will put you into an empty first-class seat.

What are the best days to fly

Tuesday and Wednesday are the quietest days to fly. These days are the least busy for travelling because flying on these days makes people take the most days off work, which isn’t an option. 

Another bonus from flying on Tuesday and Wednesday is that you most likely will purchase the cheapest tickets of the week. 

What are the worst days to fly

The busiest days to fly are Monday-Friday-Saturday-Sunday. If you work a 9-5 and can’t get away during the mid-week, you will have to settle for the busier and more expensive times to fly.

What are the best times of day to fly

The best time to fly is early morning before 8 am or anything late, most likely catching a red-eye flight. These will be the least busy flights in a day and also most likely less expensive.

Choose a favourite airline

It doesn’t matter if you are hopping on a plane once a week or once a year. By flying with the same airline, you can sign up for their rewards programs, giving you many options that will benefit your tall height, from showing up to the airport to flying 30,000 feet above the earth.

Pre-book Exit row on longer hauls

If you can’t upgrade for free from a regular economy seat to an exit row, you have two options. 

The first option is not to pay extra for the exit row seat and cross your fingers that a flight attendant will feel sorry for you as your knees dig into the seat in front of you as the person tries to recline in frustration. The chance of this happening is getting less frequent as an airline downsizes seat sizes and is making less and less money to stay afloat. 

The second option is to pick an exit row seat during the initial booking of your flight and pay the extra cost right away, adding it to your overall flight price. There are a couple of factors that come into play when choosing to do this.

How long is the flight? 

I suggest you look at it as an investment in yourself… how much is your happiness worth?

Look sharp when flying

Have you heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

It would be best if you forgot this saying as you get dressed before your flight. Getting help from the person helping you sign in and check your bags or the flight staff depends on how well your very short interactions go. We are talking 30 seconds to a few minutes to get on their good side, in hopes of them thinking that they want to do you a solid and give you more room on the flight, for no cost to you.

The second reason you want to look sharp is that they will not bump someone up to business class or first class when they are wearing a pair of sweat pants or something that they look like they slept in for the last week. 

To join the people who paid a few thousand dollars extra for their seat, then you will have to look the part. 

Wear comfortable clothing during the flight

If this is the issue, you can bring a more comfortable pair of pants and shirt to change into once your seat is settled. 

Stretch regularly/Stay hydrated

We all know the pain of having your legs go numb from digging into the chair in front of you and the nuisance of your shoulder overlapping beside you. Let’s not even talk about how our heads don’t get anywhere near the headrest for a comfortable fit. 

To help with cramps and your body aching over time, drink water before your flight and regularly during it. Hydrated muscles are more fluid than dry muscles, where a dehydrated muscle will cramp and become painful far quicker.

With all the water in your system, you will need to use the washroom more. Yes, this may be a bit annoying, but you can use the time to get up and let your limbs unfold and get some use. Getting up out of your seat and allowing the blood to circulate through your tight and cramped legs and arms will help longer flights.
